| Fernandes Fruit Market began
when Joe and Maria Fernandes came from Madeira Portugal to the Sunny
Osoyoos Valley in 1959. The following 40 years saw the Fernandes orchards,
fruit stand, and family grow. Joe remembered growing bananas, sugar cane,
and other tropical fruit in Portugal and he dreamed of doing the same
thing here. This dream was realized in 1980 when Joe built the only banana
farm in all of Canada. In the hot house he had over 500 banana trees,
sugar cane, lemon and orange trees and many other exotic plants, and the
tourists who visited thought this was just GREAT! After Joe's death, the
bananas were discontinued, but the Fruit Stand is still running. Now,
Fernandes Fruit Market is owned by Joe and Maria's 7 children who proudly
showcase local fresh fruit and vegetables, honey, jams and syrups. Fernandes Farms also includes a hot house, and a growing Packing House business where fruit and vegetables are sold to the wholesale market.
